RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN HUMANITARIAN HELP JOBS

Working in the earthquakes in Lorca and Haiti comes up the encounter with some of the United Nations agencies. And it is now, once again, that URBANA IDR arose is engagement in a research project and development of a new shelter to improve the quality of life of people who currently live in tents.

It is an innovative product developed by a specialized multidisciplinary team that meets the compulsorily requirements in emergencies: foldable, easy to carry, lightweight, quick to install and economical, but at the same time considerably implements the habitability from a tent, making it a transitional shelter, applicable to places where people who live in conflict or disaster take some time to recover their original and permanent houses.

To dignify the lives of these people, this transitional shelter is more stable, rigid, multilayer waterproof cladding and breathable, large thermal inertia, features a rigid ventilated roof, a structure fixed to land but with a raised floor which prevents the passage of moisture. The shelter is designed to adapt in the course of time to new solutions and equipped with new facilities like machines for air smoke ventilation for kitchens as well as to to integrate the whole. All this makes that the transitional shelter or progressive shelter meets the needs of the refugees from the first moment, and allows to go improving living conditions in each of the phases (emergency, transitional and long-term) with the same product.

Another important feature is that the shelter is modular and it allows  expansion in both directions, transverse and longitudinal This flexibility and adaptability of the system allows us to develop many other variables camps uses such as military housing units, hospital, offices, canteens, etc.

The shelter responds to prior research project on refugee camps and military. The product enables new arrangements of settlements that increase the social relations of the community. Due to those new arrangements common outdoor spaces that enhance the individual's relationship with the environment are created, while greater landscape integration is achieved Both, the unit and the camp of refuge use of local natural resources in order to achieve maximum energy efficiency and sustainability of the settlement.

Collaboration with technical and specialized companies, universities and institutions is favoring successful resolution with all the requirements previously explained.
