The stone crosses that marked and installed on Avenida de Denia, marking the Via Crucis from Vistahermosa to Santa Faz, will be restored by the Council of Alicante and placed back into their home. These crosses were withdrawn by the Department of Infrastructure to undertake the redevelopment of the northern entrance of the city and have now been included in the project of restoration and conservation of historic and scenic heritage of the city, providing for the execution of 23 works recovery of all elements that form part of the history of Alicante. A performance that will be financed by the central government through the second E Plan for Employment and Local Sustainability, with a contribution of 628,620 Euros.

As he recalled the spokesman for the city government team, Marta Garcia Romeu, this initiative, which was approved yesterday by the Local Government Board, includes the restoration of the iron cross that was situated at the height of the intersection of the avenues of Denia and Albufereta, and the Creu de fusta, a wooden cross, which was near the complex Vistahermosa. Both were the subject of veneration by worshipers during the celebration of the pilgrimage to the Santa Faz.

A total of 13 crosses, including a sandstone tile, depicting scenes of the Passion, which will be subject to a process of cleaning and restoration, will be returned to their original location. These crosses installed in the 50s were already restored by the Council of Alicante in the 80s and in 2006 were dismantled to make the redevelopment of Avenue Denia.

In addition, the second restoration project under Plan E covers the facade of the historic building of the former tobacco factory in the neighborhood of San Antón, which also aims to light as well as the remains of the defensive wall of that medieval period which is preserved in the Paseíto Ramiro. Garcia Romeu said that once the project will be approved by the Central Government, the procedures for contracting the works of the recovered 23 monuments will initiate, in order to be finished before December 31 this year, the date will begin imposing as a deadline for the implementation of this initiative.

The rehabilitation of the facade of the eighteenth century tobacco factory integrates the activities carried out by the Municipal Culture to create a large space with new cultural endowments as the seat of Municipal Band, or of the Bureau of Conservation of Historical Patrimony of Alicante. The project has been recently announced by the mayor, Sonia Castedo, for the creation of the City Film and Culture in the former tobacco factory that the Government will fund.

The project approved yesterday by the City Council will be the second of the recovery plans of the sculptures and monuments. The first, which included 24 sculptures of the city budget, was allocated 330,000 Euros, which rose to € 500,000 with contributions from the company Aguas de Alicante, which has been responsible for the restoration of the fountains in the square of Gabriel Miró, known as La Aguadora, and the fountain of the flautist Child on the Canalejas Park.
